The Strength of the Small Church at the National Gathering

The Strength of the Small Church at the National Gathering

by Camile Josey, Herb Codington and Rev. Dr. Lisa Culpepper

In one generation God used the small house churches of the early Christian movement to turn the world upside down. By the 4th century, Christianity had spread across the width and breadth of the Roman Empire. No CNN, no Twitter, no FaceBook. Why, then, do small churches in the West today feel so insignificant and as though they do not have the resources to continue the spread of the Gospel? Perhaps because we have become disconnected from one another and fail to see how small churches are the seeds that Jesus has spread across the soil of this nation.

Yes, at times those in smaller congregations do feel disconnected and isolated.  This yearning for community has been the impetus for many to cultivate networks or clusters involving smaller churches.  The discovery is that “together is better;” together churches are encouraged, empowered, and mobilized.  Come, and meet others from smaller congregations and get connected!

In the midst of chaotic cultural change, thousands of small membership churches shine the bright light of Christ in communities, both rural and urban across our land. In order toremain equipped for this task, let us respond to this opportunity for growth and inspiration as the Fellowship Community hosts its National Conference.
