I can hardly believe what I am hearing. This is the most heartening thing I have heard or seen in a long time! You guys need to push ahead full steam and use the Scripture as your guide. I trust we will soon see a new conservative Presbyterian denomination that continues the great Scriptural and Reformed tradition of the Presbyterian church. I pray that something good will be born out of this that will bring glory to God.

I watched John Ortberg’s presentation last night and found it inspiring!

We can surely all agree that we need to plant new churches, do better at evangelism, be more creative, take more chances, be more inclusive, preserve our legacy, etc. My question is this: Why can’t the ECO do this within the confines of the PCUSA without starting a new denomination? While Rev. Ortberg is one of my favorite authors, and a terrific preacher, I find it odd that he never once mentioned the real reason ECO wants out.

He asks a question at the end of his talk. He asks “are you willing to commit the rest of your life to this cause?” Well my answer is yes, but within the confines of the PCUSA.

Good! The PC(USA) needs people who are deeply committed to all of these things. But the PC(USA) is also making it impossible for many evangelicals to remain within the denomination and still maintain theological integrity. There is no one “real reason” for this. If you are referring to the change in ordination standards, the recent actions of the Board of Pensions, or the impending change in the definition of marriage, these are not “the reasons” for The Fellowship being created within the PC(USA) or ECO being created beyond–they are symptoms of a much larger and more pernicious problem that those who remain within the PC(USA) need to take very seriously and those who are forming ECO need to guard against in a new denominational context.

I get the issue of Ordination Standards as this has been discussed and changed several times through various overtures. And while I don’t see this as a reason to leave the PC(USA), can you clarify your comment “symptoms of a much larger and more pernicious problem….?” I am unaware of any specific problem. Thanks

The larger issue is an ongoing shift from theological orthodoxy and obedience to the clear teaching of scripture. We have a post coming on that in the near future.
